Kunming Introduction

Kunming, the capital of Yunnan Province and the biggest city of the southwest frontier of China, has a history of more than 2400 years. It is the political, economic, cultural, science and transportation center of Yunnan Province as well as a famous tourist city. It covers an area of 21,111 square kilometers and has a population of over 5 million.

Kunming is approximately at the same location as northern Mexico, only on the other side of the world. However, because it's situated on a 1.2 -mile (2-km) high plateau and enjoys a protected location, with mountains to the north, east and west, it has a mild climate, with an average temperature of 65 degrees Fahrenheit (18 degrees Celsius), making it spring all year round.

Yunnan is home to 25 ethnic minorities, and is endowed with a remarkable traditional folk culture. And Kunming, the capital city, celebrated as "City of Eternal Spring", is well known for its diverse cultures, breath-taking natural scenery and pleasant climate. Kunming attracts about 3 million tourists annually.

Beautiful attractions in Kunming include the Stone Forest, Xishan (West Hill), Jiuxiang and Yunnan Nationalities Village, Daguan Park, Black Dragon Pool, Cuihu Lake, Yutong Mountain,  Dianchi Lake, and Heilongtan.

Vicinity Attractions

Dali, a historically and culturally famous city of China, is renowned for her historical interest. During the Tang and Song Dynasties, it was the capital of Nanzhao and Dali Kingdoms, the political, economic and cultural center of Yunnan, an important gateway of cultural exchange and trading with southeastern Asian countries, and an important pass of the ancient 'Silk Route of the South'.

Lijiang, possibly the best-preserved old town in China, is one of the last places in this country where one can witness and experience a historical, traditional, ancient urban culture. Remarkably, the old houses with stone foundations, plastered whitewashed brick walls, red wooden doors, shutters and balconies, and sloping tiled roofs, survived a recent earthquake without much damage, while the new concrete buildings were flattened.  The famous Yulong Snow Mountain is situated some 15km north of Lijiang, with its main peak, Mount Fan (Shanzidou) being 5,596 meters above sea level, and is snowcapped year around.

Dreamland of Shangri-la, gives you an in-depth exploration of stunning Yunnan Province, and is an ideal addition for those wanting to immerse themselves in the local (Miao, Dai and Tibet) cultures and surroundings.
